A veterinarian in South Australia may have encountered something out of this world while driving home. Dr. Andrew Melville-Smith's routine highway commute was violently interrupted when a small object crashed into his windshield. Despite the shocking impact scattering shards of glass throughout his brand new Tesla Model Y, cruise control kept the vehicle driving smoothly until he could safely pull over in the dark.
Although the projectile wasn't recovered, the windshield glass showed signs of melting and scorching, implying the object that glanced off the car was flying through the atmosphere at meteoric speed, much faster than a bullet. The odds of this impact are estimated to be roughly a billion to one, and if confirmed it would be the first known meteorite collision with a moving vehicle.
